Do you ever just need for things to be quiet? A time to shut off everything around you and just be?
Well that is what Luke and I are doing this week.
On Sunday night we decided together that we were going to abstain from any TV watching this week.
For those of you that know me well, you know that this is bad. I can't even think of a witty metaphor to compare the absence of TV in my life. It's just bad in general.
However, I know that I watch a little too much TV and I have felt convicted about it lately, and have actually even thought that I need to cut TV out of my life for awhile. So when Luke brought it up I knew that it was something that we both needed to do.
It may seem weird or silly to just stop watching TV for a week, but we have legit reasons. We have a lot of questions and things to figure out right now in our life. Apparently the addition of a new CHILD to your family will do that. So instead of flippantly asking God our questions and then continuing on with life, we will stop and listen.
Which might be what everybody else does, but for me, there maybe, might, have been times in the past when I would ask God a specific question and then in that same breathe quickly turn on the Real Housewives of Atlanta and watch NeNe tell Kim "I WILL snap your neck". So biblical.
Last night was our first night without TV and I actually survived. Luke commented on how nice it was to not have noise all the time. While I sat in the corner in tears. At one point we actually got in a bit of an argument. Well Luke said it was a discussion, but I call it an argument, and I might have commented on how the absence of TV causes us to go crazy and argue.
I also did not agree that it was nice to not have noise. I am the kind of person who comes home and instantly turns on the TV. It doesn't matter what channel or what show (nothing scary). As long as the TV is on I am golden.
So obviously this is going to be good for me. It is good to take away the frivolous things in life that we think we are dependent on in life every once in awhile and truly go back to the basics of where our dependence is.
And can I just say one thing? Why is it that the one week of my life that I'm not watching TV Oprah flipping finds her SISTER? I mean what is up with that?
And don't even get me started on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reunion. Thankfully my DVR will be working overtime this week.
Who knows, maybe by the end of the week I won't even care about all that trash anymore?
Although I think that's doubtful. I need 12 step program for my addiction to the Housewives.
I don't think I could do it! But I might need to. I don't want the tv to be on once the baby's born, but I need my background noise!
ReplyDeleteOh I'm the same way about turning the tv on as soon as I get home. It's just me and my dogs so I like the tv on, I do not like that creepy quiet....that's probably not very healthy though.
ReplyDeleteWe cut our cable earlier this month - so we only have about 4 or 5 channels from the antenna - and Netflix, and I'm actually really enjoying it. We did this both to save money but also because I was feeling we just spent too much time watching TV...and I am finding that I am much more productive without the constant distraction. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI have an unhealthy addiction to my DVR too. I bet abstaining from it for a week would be a nice break, though. You can do it!
ReplyDeleteturn on your radio/iPod for background music! sometimes i play worship music and if i am grumpy, i can only remain that way for so long until the sweet sounds of worship change my heart! it will give you uplifting background noise and help you not to wonder whats going on with the housewives, etc!!
ReplyDeleteMy husband is obsessive with the TV and MUST have it on 24/7 in order to function. I believe TV is waste of time and kills brain cells so I might suggest we try this NO TV for a week or so and see what happens!
ReplyDeleteGood for y'all Megan!! It's not easy but praying that you and Luke will have a peaceful week and enjoy each other and the quiet :)
ReplyDeleteYou forgot about the Bachelor on Monday night! Lol! I don't watch much t.v, but i am likeing the Bachelor this season. OH and American Idol! Sorry..... I do love your blog. It's so exciting that you are going to have your first baby soon:) I have two boys myself and there is nothing that compares to being a parent. It's wonderful!! Life changing. No one can tell you though, you'll feel it the moment your baby is born!
ReplyDeletesorry, liking, not likeing.
ReplyDeleteWe kinda did the same thing. I'm really the only one who watches tv as well. My husband decided to get netflix, and I love it! So much so, that I decided to cancel cable...well not completely, but we only get the really basic channels....like up to channel 24...and that's it! There's a lot to watch on netflix, but it's a much more deliberate decision to watch something specific instead of just turning on the tv and vegging out. It's amazing how much extra time you have to do other things when you're not watching tv! I feel for you though...even though I didn't really watch tv as much, I had a moment of panic when we actually canceled it...as though we couldn't turn it back on if I REALLY missed it.
ReplyDeleteWalk in the door from work and head straight for the remote...I have what some might consider an unhealthy addiction to the news. Sometimes it can be as ridiculous as Housewives! Good luck, and I think this is actually a great idea!
ReplyDeletegood for you! you'll have to let me know how this goes. i've found myself watching far less tv now that we don't have cable and it's actually really nice!!
ReplyDeleteI can totally understand this... For our "resolutions" this year we decided we needed to watch less tv or get rid of cable all together. We both are nervous to pull the plug as we both have had a tv in our rooms for as long as we can remember!!!
ReplyDeleteWe have taken great strides toward watching less tv though. Instead of turning it on right away when I get home I leave it off, do a few chores or at least get dinner started without it on. I just play music instead... which helps with the quiet thing. I am not too into quiet all of the time! :)
MEGAN!!!!!! I am about to talk about this on my blog when its over but my hubby and I have been fasting TV for the last three weeks!!!!! OH MY!!! It is HARD. But SOOOOOOO cool and worth it! God has been so working on us, girl. We have been some praying and scripture reading fools! ha! And let me just say, my DVR is FULL! ha! :) Can't wait to compare bloggy notes with you! So excited for you! I feel your pain AND am excited for you at the same time, if that makes sense!!!!!
ReplyDeleteUm....all I have to say is: Oprah has a sister?!? What in the world! I'm so out of the loop!
ReplyDeleteOh man, I'd never be able to make this, good luck!!
ReplyDeleteoh girl! i'm sad for you, but also inspired. don't know if i could do it. can you believe oprah has a sister?! crazy! i was really looking forward to your take on the reunion show too. maybe next week? good luck!
ReplyDeleteI can think of two positives......
ReplyDelete1) This TV fast is during the week of the State of the Union Address. You are missing NOTHING tonight.
2) This is before February Sweeps, which starts next week, when TV gets really good.
Go you! We actually have the tv on tonight and it hasn't been on in days. i wanted to watch Glee. And it will be going off momentarily. I think moving, not having a tv stand, and not having cable or a great antenna has really helped. We just don't watch it. And i used to turn it on immediately when I got home when we lived in the apartment. Now, instead of watching tv, we play music, read, talk, computer stuff, mostly things that are much more productive than tv. So it's been a good change. Also, we've been listening to some really awesome music via pandora. So I hope you like the change. (-:
ReplyDelete~K
Remember when I tv fasted last year and then emailed you and told you I was pregnant from not having tv? Ha! :)
ReplyDeleteIt really was a great 3 weeks for us. Hard, but great! God taught us a lot. Hope it's a good week for y'all!
I think I just fainted from shock. NO TV?! I don't know what to say! Enjoy the quiet!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea my friend - I will be praying you hear lots from the Lord this week!
