An Old Soul

I love working on a college campus.

But let me tell you, nothing makes you feel more old than surrounding yourself with a bunch of college students.

The other day, during an event I told one student worker to turn on some music.

So, naturally she turned on some music that was barely audible amidst the loud base sounds, and pretty sure I heard something about slapping that hoe.

Not exactly what I had in mind.

I immediately turned around and said "Turn that trash off."

It was like I turned 90 right then and there.

And I say 90 because neither my parents, nor grandparents are 90 and I'm sure they have never uttered "turn that trash off" it was like I skipped several generations in one fail swoop.

I like to be around the college kids, it helps me better understand my youngest sister who is almost 18, which makes me cry when I think of how fast she has grown.

And almost every time I'm with her I want to tell her I remember the day she was born, but then I remember that makes me sound NINETY so I try to refrain.

I try to say things like, "isn't that Justin Bieber just so adorable?" trying to fit in with the younger generation but instead I come across looking worse than ever.

Speaking of my sister I was so happy because yesterday Luke and I ventured up to north OK to spend a little bit of quality time with my family and his family.

But not together, because while everybody gets along it stresses me out waaaaay too much for our families to get together more than once a quarter.

Its like putting a group of people who are the complete opposite in every. single. way. and saying, here, you barely know each other, you didn't choose to be family, but now you are, so now you must become BFF for the sake of your children.

So anyways Luke and I were on the highway and he mentioned that we hadn't been home (home=where our parents live) since Christmas.

I was in shock! That seems like forever ago.

Then I remembered that we bought a little something called a home and every since then we have been pulled down into this huge black vortex known as, house projects, house cleaning, wood floors, yard work, tree work, decorations, crying because I don't know how to decorate, buying furniture, crying because I don't know what to do with the furniture, etc etc etc.

It's like every single thing in my life that mattered took a backseat to this house.

So dear friends, if you are thinking hm.. MeganTree hasn't commented on my blog lately, just remember it's not you, it's me.

And the fact that I have posts in my google reader dating back to March and I REFUSE to click "mark all as read".

And I realize this post may not make much sense, I'm not even sure where I was going with it.

Other than to say, I'm young but have an old soul, I cry thinking about my baby sister graduating, family get togethers stress me out, I'm trying to read all of your posts, and I don't want to listen to a song about somebody slapping that hoe.

Thank you

  1. I don't get the whole Justin Bieber thing either.

  2. I feel 90's prom season where I work and my ears shudder at some of the songs that come out of the DJs. Plus there's the fact that all of the girls attending the prom look older than me. In a weird twisted way that makes me feel good though, because it cannot be good in the long term that you look 10 years older than you are. Looking 60 when your really 50 just won't be cool...

  3. I am an old soul too! I don't understand the Justin Beiber love, I just bought a home and *seriously* stress over what to do with it decor wise, everything has taken a back seat to the house, and I refuse to hit 'mark all as read' no matter how far behind I am! I still adore your blog, no matter how busy you are! :)

  4. I actually have the same feelings about our families! I want everyone to get together and be bestest friends...but my parents are SO different from Matt's parents is is ridiculous. R.I.D.I.C.U.L.O.U.S.

  5. lol love that last part. such an adorable blog. I'm following. :)

  6. Ha, randomness in full effect! Love it! DW and I couldn't have more different families either. In fact, we just mixed the worlds this past Christmas for the first time. Since we eloped, neither family had met and it had been 4 years so we figured it was time.

  7. I can't imagine how it must feel to be on a college campus all the time, I think it would definitely make me feel old too! Luckily we live in the retirement capital of CA, so we feel super young everywhere we go.

  8. Dude, I feel old too.

And I want to go to bed. At 8 pm.

  9. My sister is 10 years younger than me and I always said she keeps me young and hip and she helped me understand my elementary students. How that she is 16, I feel out of the loop with her and my students. I'm not ready for her to grow up!!

  10. Ohmygosh Megan, I laughed through the whole post. I just love your sense of humor! And I had tears over the Justin Beibler thing. I had NO IDEA who he was until I kept seeing his name trending on Twitter so I googled him. Sad, I know!

  11. Just Beiber???? I sure hope that was a little lie you told to fit in with the teens! You know my thoughts on him!

But I'm really commenting to say I know how it feels to "mix" families and even though they all get along and everyone is nice, it's juts plain WEIRD. Sometimes I wish we could all be happy together, but I'm totally okay doing things separately to ease the awkwardness.

  12. I laughed so hard when I read this. Love it!! My husband looked at me like I was crazy!! & then even crazier when I tried to explain!

  13. Your blog makes me laugh harder than any other one I read.

  14. HI-LARIOUS!!! I am definitely an old soul, too. And I am really wanting to come to OK soon so we can discuss all our ailments and how fast time goes together like fellow 90-year-olds!!!!! :)

  15. 1. Justin Bieber gets on my ever lovin' nerves.
    2. Hoes should be slapped but we shouldn't have to listen to an instructional song on the subject.
    3. Buying a home totally excuses you from commenting.

  16. So glad I'm not the only one who dreads mixed family get-togethers. My husband's graduating from law school this Saturday, and imagining our two families hanging out is more stressful than planning a party for 50 (which I'm also doing)!

And Justin Bieber? Seriously. I need someone to explain that phenomenon to me.

  17. Oh my gosh, I have the same personality anxiety! I worry SOOO much about putting different people together in a mutual setting. The thought of them not meshing well completely stresses me out. I have no idea why. And even though I'm not married yet, I am 100% positive I will have the same inlaw anxiety! Glad it's not just me!

  18. I've been reading your blog for awhile now, but have never commented! I feel the same way you do, my husband if filling in at our church right now as youth pastor and I told a kid the same thing the other night!

  19. Megan, this cracked me up! I can sooo relate and especially to the sister thing because my sister is 7 years younger than me!!

  20. You made me laugh out loud! I love the way you write!

  21. i'm 31 and feel 61. my name is andrea and I like cafeteria style restaurants, heavy cardigans, and eating dinner at 5:00.

  22. This post totally made me laugh! Love it <3 You remind me so much of my sweet friend Ashely lol

  23. You crack me up friend!

I had a break-down (which might be a slight exaggeration) the other day thinking about how OLD I am and how I'm not longer the girl the boys at camp have crushes on. Nope, I'm now "that lady with the baby" -- sob.

  24. i hear you on feeling old, i always want to say quiet down, although if i were really old and hard of hearing maybe i would want people to speak up more, ha! (i am obviously quite tired right now, haha! p.s. i had more comment typed and erased it all bc i don't think i'm making much sense right now :-) hehe)

  25. I'm with you on feeling college years seem so long ago!

  26. You crack me up. This went through three topics in one second!

And I won't click mark all as read either. I. Just. Can't. Do. It.

Who's Justin Beiber? Is that that like 12 year old singer? I might be 90 too.

Thank you for leaving a comment. I try my best to respond to all comments but don't always succeed. I do love reading each and every comment though!
