Three hours later I am sitting in front of the TV, with a computer sitting on my lap looking at every decorating blog possible.
And I'm feeling completely inadequate when it comes to decorating our little home.
I have no idea how to decorate. I see these amazing things that people do in their homes and then I read how they do it and all of the words start to run together and it begins to sound like a foreign language and then I lose all focus.
It is equivalent to me sitting in math class in high school.
Nothing makes sense, therefore I give up and make an F.
Thankfully I'm not being graded on the appearance of my house.
Just being judged by everybody who walks through the door.
Just kidding, only some of my friends are judgers.
I feel like this house has changed me. In fact I'm not the only person who has noticed the change. This morning while getting ready for work Luke said "babe, this house is really changing you."
I said "Oh really, how is that?"
He said "well you haven't been shopping in a whole month."
I didn't dare remind him that I have spent the last month spending absurd amounts of money on new items for the house, or that the fact that he is surprised that I haven't shopped in a measly month is embarrassing and I need to take a little shopping break.
I just looked at him, smiled and wondered to myself if that meant that I could spend more money on house things?
Hm.. the possibilities.
Anyways, I don't want to continue to talk about how I don't know how to decorate, because I feel like its the only thing I talk about these days.
I tend to become obsessed with things very easily. And I think we all know this by now. I'm the only 26 year old in America still obsessed with Titanic.
And I'm fairly convinced I'm the reason why the job "Interior Decorator" was created. I can't even hang a picture straight. Even using a level.
Level's confuse me. You have to hold the level straight to get a straight line, so what is the point of a level?
And the fact that I flunked math in high school just made complete and utter sense to everybody reading this blog.
Has anybody seen my copy of So Long Insecurity? Clearly I have decorating insecurities.
I can't just end a post talking about my insecurities. So I want to share this recipe with you. I made this little pizza balls tonight and they were delicious! Try it!
Speaking of recipes, when I explained to my husband that I am insecure about decorating he told me that I used to be bad at cooking and now I'm really good at it, so maybe one day I will be good at decorating.
I think there was a compliment in there somewhere.....
I assure you, you aren't the only one who sees other peoples amazing homes that they decorated themselves and gets a little, well annoyed that they're good at it and you aren't. I would love a cute and quaint little apartment, but we're so far from it. I know we could make our place so cute, I just don't know how.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your husband though, I bet it will come to you, just like cooking did!
You are so funny.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the first thing about decorating either. Its half the reason I'm scared to buy a house.
And this very morning: My Heart Will Go On was on the radio while I was driving. I was pumped. And then the announcer said he heard about a sequel. Not sure how that could happen, but who knows.
Just keep reading those decor blogs until you find your style :)
ReplyDeleteCheck out this one if you haven't already! I love her home...

Oh girl, we all get insecure about things!! I bet it's just the fact you haven't had a house of your own yet, and so no experience. Becoming a home owner is a lot to process quickly! I can admit this because I'm one who wants things to be as they should or looking good right away and of course, that's never feasible!
ReplyDeleteThe good thing is, you can practice as MUCH as you want. Buy things, leave tags on the. If you don't like where they are - move them. If you don't end up liking them at all - take them back!
I'm sure you've been bombarded with all the awesome decorating blogs out there. Luckily, you probably won't even have to pick up a magazine because most end up being posted online!
Good luck :)
ps - I'm about to move into a house that is 100 years hold! Heaven help me!
ReplyDeleteDecorating is tough work! I know I already talked to you about this a little but I feel EXACTLY the way you said. I just look at everyone else's house and I clam up. My thoughts go in a hundred directions and I can't prioritize or compartamentalize! haha
ReplyDeleteI am making those pizza balls! They look so good and so easy! I've just wasted [well, not really] about 20 minutes looking around for other recipes on that website. It's a great site!! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday!!
Honestly, if you don't know where to start, a decorator may be the person to call! Sometimes they can come out and give you ideas for a small fee as a consultation. You never know what they may come up with!
ReplyDeleteMy other point of advice is just to buy what you like. At some point, everything will work together because you like it!
You are hilarious! I have a really bad habit of buying things at HobLob, Target, or wherever else that I think MIGHT look good in my house, bring it home and test it out (without removing the tags), get other opinions, let it sit there for a few days and grow on me, and then if I change my mind or get bad reviews from others...take it back. It's great!
ReplyDeleteThose pizza balls look delicious! Definitely may have to be on my new recipe list!
ReplyDeleteI know you've heard it a thousand times, but the decorating will come...I would start with a piece of art or a piece of furniture...a focal point that you can start with was always a help for me!
I feel the same way sometimes. We have lived in our house for a few years now. A lot of our pieces have been acquired over time. Most go together, but lately I've been feeling like I want to redecorate to get a more cohesive feel. But then I realize I don't know where to start!
ReplyDeleteI'm so with you. I don't feel like I can decorate at all. I'm dreading moving into a new house next year for that very reason! Want the house, but then I have to decorate it. UGH!
ReplyDeleteI'm about to be in the same boat as you...we just bought our first house. Before you spend $$ on a decorator maybe you could post some pictures of your rooms and ask your readers to give suggestions. Free help!
ReplyDeleteYour posts always make me chuckle. Check out my catalog for great decorating ideas. The pictures are great inspiration. www.micheleb.eahweb.com
ReplyDeleteYou'll do fine it takes a while to decorate a home. It's like a neverending project.
All I can say is that decorating is a process you and you just have to keep reading and looking until you find your own personal tastes. I love three blogs that always give me ideas:
ReplyDelete1. younghouselove
2. Making it lovely
3. Brooklyn Limestone
There ideas are classic, timeless, and usually affordable.
I also really like the magazines fresh home and DIY by better homes and gardens. I spend a few days each month in Barnes and Noble reading them from cover to cover.
Good luck!
Those pizza balls look amazing. I'm so with you on not knowing how to decorate. It frustrates me beyond belief. I just can't see the whole picture when it's not there. You'd think I would be able to because I'm pretty creative but no. Sigh!
ReplyDeleteif I were only there to yell at you, take the level from you and show you how to use it (while you were not paying attention to my lesson at all). That's what I felt like doing when I read that comment.
ReplyDeleteYou can get good at decorating! Don't worry! You know what I have done before, worked in a room, moved stuff around and take a picture of it to see what it looks like. If you're not so sure about something, move things around again and take another pic. Then you can compare and see what looks best. Try it! =)
ReplyDeleteThat recipe sounds so good. I am going to have to make these for Mr. Guru one night.
ReplyDeletehaha I get the same way . . . just dont think about it - just do it :-) start buying things you like, pick colors you like . . . do what makes you happy and your house will be a beautiful, happy place :-)
ReplyDeleteUghhhh decorating totally freaks me out...so nerve wracking. You are NOT alone.
ReplyDeleteGirl, I miss your face. Don't worry about getting the decorating stuff "perfect"... stuff like that takes time. You will get it done and you will figure it out. It doesn't have to be perfect - it just has to be yours.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way! I'm horrible at this decorating thing. I need to figure out a style and stick with it. I'm too fickle.
ReplyDeleteI loved this post. It's exactly how I'm feeling! I'm in the process of evaulating our apartment's style (or lack thereof) and sift through decorating blogs every day. It's great to find a kindred spirit. Hopefully we'll both capture the spirit of the styles we're after :)
