The Bread Dilemma

It has almost been a year since Luke and I got married and it has flown by.

You always hear that the first year is hard to survive, but I feel like ours wasn't bad. Did we fight? Heck yes. But for the most part it was a great first year of marriage.

While thinking back on our first year I thought of our first fight.

It occurred at the grocery store.

You see, we didn't live together before we got married, so we had never gone grocery shopping together.

So the week we got back from our honeymoon we ventured out to the grocery store. Excited about the endless opportunities that awaited us.

Our first time grocery shopping as Husband and Wife. Good times were sure to be had.

We began our grocery shopping in the fruit aisle and it seemed that everything was going smoothly

Then it happened. Our first grocery shopping dilemma.

We arrived at the bread aisle and we both naturally reached for our preferred bread.

White bread for me.
Wheat bread for Luke.

We looked at each other, waiting for the other one to fold.

We had our very own stare-down right there on aisle 3 holding our bread of choice.

Luke asked me if I was serious about getting white bread.

I explained to him that I grew up eating wheat bread, and it wasn't until I went to college that I discovered the delicious freedom that white bread held, and the thought of going back to wheat bread made me want to vomit, I couldn't possibly imagine trying to eat it. I would rather starve.

I think it was at this point that he accused me of being dramatic.

Which I still don't understand, I'm not dramatic.

I suggested we each buy our own loaf, but this was of course out of the question for my penny-pinching husband.

So we were stuck.

I don't remember exactly how it escalated, but I do remember one of us throwing the bread back on the shelf, and then walking off.

We then went our separate ways in the grocery store. The Bread Dilemma had gotten the best of us.

I distinctly remember us passing each other in one of the aisles and not even saying a word.

At that time, the sight of that wheat-bread-eating-man, disgusted me.

Luke had the grocery cart, so I just wandered around the store aimlessly, eventually winding up in the magazine aisle.

Somehow, someway, amidst the bread drama we came back together and agreed upon a plan.

We would alternate breads. This week wheat bread, next week white, and so on.

It was an excellent plan that is still working for us almost a year later.

Although I have been known to sneak a white bread in two weeks in a row.

And I have to say, when we told my mom this story the only thing she said was: "I can't believe you eat white bread now, I raised you to eat wheat."

So, what are you??? A Wheat or White Bread person???

  1. LOL!! Love this story. It sounds like me and my hubby. I'm a white bread kind of girl and he is a wheat bread guy. I win the argument. I get my white bread. Occasionaly he will be his wheat bread in addition. Just don't tell me him about alternating breads, because I really don't want to eat wheat bread. :)

  2. that's a great story. I love wheat bread. It's so much healthier. I like whole grain wheat and make sure it has plenty of fiber. I feel like the white bread is like eating like bleached flour and has 0 nutritional value. But, my step-dad loves white. Everyone's different, but for me, the health factor wins. I'm glad you guys worked out a good compromise.

  3. Wheat! It's so much better for you..sorry to say. Although I get honey wheat and it's actually quite soft and tasty!

  4. I grew up eating wheat bread, including wheat bread grilled cheese (to this day, I shudder at the memory of that awful taste). Like you, I take advantage of my independence and only buy white--until I get on a health kick and try to sneak wheat bread into the cart.

  6. That is hilarious! I grew up eating wheat. I always loved going to my grandmas though because she had white bread! haha! Oh the simple things! We both eat wheat so that's what we buy weekly!

  8. Oh my gosh.... this is such a funny story! Isn't it so funny the we (couples) can bicker over?

I'm a wheat girl, grew up that way and still eat it.

  9. Wow..cool Megan!!
I grew up eating white bread..but nowadays I prefered wheat bread as it were more healthier, according to someone pro..
My boyfriend is okay with either one.So we don't have this bread conflicts. But somehow,my boyfriend is too lazy to help me with housework.Do you have this problem??

  10. We're a wheat family! A few years back I started buying whole grain bread and pasta. Now I actually prefer the taste of wheat more than white!

I'm proud of you for your compromise...it's hard to do sometimes!

  11. That is so funny! Aren't fights so silly and funny when you go back and think about them?

We typically buy the "White Whole Wheat" by Wonder bread. It's a white bread, but it is whole wheat and has as much fiber as a load of wheat bread. Or, some weeks, we go to Panera and buy there sourdough if we're making paninis that week. That's my favorite!

  12. My husband and I had the same white-wheat divide! So funny! We've agreed that this is why we love going out to breakfast so much, so we can each get our own toast of choice!

  13. This is TOO funny! Love it! I eat wheat or whole grain but I only do it because it is better for me. There is nothing like a piece of soft, white bread!!! You go girl!

  14. Oh this story hits home! After 14 years of marriage- we STILL fight over bread! He likes a certain brand & I like another... seriously - I just buy two seperate loaves to keep the peace!

And most of the times, the birds benefit because either one of us cant eat a whole loaf before it goes stale :)

  15. I'm a wheat bread person but so is the boy. I just like whole wheat, but he likes the gritty 12-grain stuff. We usually buy both and just keep it in the freezer and defrost what we're each going to be needing. This way nothing goes to waste and we both get what we want! If you guys are looking for a compromise you should try cracked wheat! It's somewhere in the middle and it's yummy too :)

  16. Josh and I are both wheat bread folks.

    Cute story...your solution works!

  17. What a cute story! We are wheat bread eaters in our home. For me, the more "wheaty" the better!

  18. I think this describes every marriage perfectly! I'm a white bread person, but we eat whole wheat bread. I have just gotten used to it. Ty learned a lot of nutrition stuff during his 1st semester of med school and he hates processed food now. I guess white is more processed. I don't know. I tend to tune him out. haha! All of his profs and docs shop at whole foods and are always bringing snacks from there. Ty had never been to one, so I took him and he couldn't get over the sticker shock. Oh my tightwad husband! :)

  19. Megan,

What a GREAT compromise!! You do know wheat bread is better for ya...just sayin' =)

    Have a Blessed day,
    Dawn

  20. that's a great story... ryan and i have had the most stupid fights like that! thankfully though we are both wheat people :)

  21. Wheat bread all the way. White sticks to the top of your mouth. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. My hubby and I had the same problem - we compromised with some sort of "tame" wheat bread (honey wheat) because he likes the really thick nutty dry bread that I LITERALLY CANNOT SWALLOW and I like white bread . . .

    ReplyDelete
  23. That is hilarious!!! Did you read my post yesterday about what Joey did to me when we were bickering last week?? Seriously.... marriage is so fun!

Cute story... and I eat wheat, but was raised on white. :)

  24. I grew up on white, but now eat Honey Wheat, although I like both equally well.
SaraLee makes a whole grain white (or some name similar to that) which is pretty darn good! I have just found that we don't eat bread enough to keep that around because it gets moldy quicker than our usual Honey wheat- for whatever reason.
I have converted WEG from only eating white bread to eating wheat.

  25. I am VERY loyal to Nature's Own Honey Wheat and have been since college. You're funny :)

  26. We're wheat bread people. White bread, for some reason, sticks to the roof of my mouth. Gross. But we don't really eat a lot of bread so we usually get a loaf and freeze it until we need some.

  27. I grew up on white bread. I eat either now. However, I did find a wheat bread that I love. It's by Baker's Inn. If you see that brand, you should try it. Yum Yum=)

  28. This story cracks me up! Garth and I went through this same dilemma, so funny!

  29. You guys are so funny. We were the same way- only opposite. I wanted wheat and he wanted white. we eat homemade now though. = )

  30. I eat wheat! This story is hilarious!!

  31. Maybe you guys should try the White Wheat bread by Nature's Own it's the healthy white sandwich:) My kids love it!!!

  32. That is so funny! Isn't is always the small things that spark the biggest fights? My boyfriend grabs whatever is closest or cheapest, doesn't matter if it's white or wheat. I usually buy one of each so I can have my pick if the mood to have bread strikes me. :)

  33. I used to eat white bread, but now I eat wheat bread. I heard someone say(I think a doctor) that eating white bread was like eating white glue. Seriously. He proceeded to tell me the ingredients that make what he said make sense.

Even though my mom grew up eating white bread, she now eats wheat. It's much healthier for you. I think it's interesting how our tastebuds change over time. This story is HILARIOUS!

  34. Like another commenter said, we get the honey wheat most of the time, but we started out with regular wheat bread.

    ReplyDelete
  35. LOVE IT!! I'm w/ you Megan, I love white bread. Wheat leaves you with a bad after taste.

  36. I grew up on wheat bread, til I skipped off to college and found my love for white. Not I'm back on wheat.. the Mr? all white. So we eat white at the house, but if we go anywhere I always get wheat. He grocery shops so I figure I have no right to be picky!!

    Funny story!

  37. One of our first arguements was over left overs:) we both like wheat but sometimes ibuy white:) first fights r fun to look back on!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love wheat! White is great for those classic PB&J sandwiches though! And grilled cheese!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Both, but since in college straight wheat girl here.

    ReplyDelete
  40. well, never really thought about it....but my favorite bread is Sunbeam old fashioned white bread-probably about as unhealthy as it comes!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Eh, I can do either. I do love white bread, but lately I've gotten into eating the Whole Wheat Double Fiber bread. I have to pick off the crust though because it has grains on it and that is not acceptable. Nothing is as good as white bread, though!

    ReplyDelete
  42. The good thing is that you guys fight about things like bread. I loved the story. I am a white bread person myself, but the boyfriend is a wheat. Good thing he isnt too picky though. This could be because we don't live together and he cant be too picky about what I get :-)

  43. The thought of white bread grosses me out completely. Even soft wheat bread does. I'm all about crunchy, 12 grain or granola bread with nuts and oats and all...

    ReplyDelete
  44. love this story! I'm glad you guys came up with a good plan...and that sometimes you can sneak two weeks in a row! haha :)

  45. I only wish it was a choice between white or wheat! I can not eat wheat at all, so it has to be gluten free. But, my wonderful husband eats the gluten free right along with me. We do have different preferences for pancake syrup--I like Karo syrup, he gags at the thought of it.
