So I waited until I felt like the time was right (which for me would have been the day after I met her, but I have learned to let people get used to me before I bombard them with questions). So one day I asked her how she managed to keep her ring so shiny. She then proceeded to tell me she cleaned it with toothpaste. Yes toothpaste.
Two and a half years have passed since that time and I now have a ring of my own – and I cannot bring myself to clean it with toothpaste.
Other girls in our church have adopted this cleaning style and their rings are SO shiny. I always comment on how shiny they are and they simply remind me that mine could also be this shiny if I would just breakout the toothpaste.
But I just can’t seem to do it. I’m just afraid I would get toothpaste stuck in the crevices of my ring and then it would be all gross, but yet minty fresh.
So my question to you is: Have you ever heard of this? Have you ever tried this? Do you have your own ‘special’ way to clean your jewels to make them bright and shiny?

I've heard of it but, like you, the mere thought of it makes me more than a little nervous. However, if you get an overload of comments saying that it is, indeed, true, I just may be cleaning my ring with toothpaste from now on.

I do this all the time! Just make sure it is a soft bristled tooth brush. I'm afraid of scratching with a hard one. It really works! Oh and make sure you plug the drain, just in case!

ReplyDeleteYup, it's the only thing I use! My husband brushes his teeth in the shower (weird, I know) so I keep an extra old toothbrush for me in there too. With the hot water and steam from the shower, when I'm ready to get out I take just a dab of toothpaste with the old toothbrush scrub away. Then just rinse with the hot shower water. I usually don't even take off my rings, just do it right on my finger. I do it about every 3 days.

I have done this with a watch face: It worked temporarily but wasn't like a brand new face. I have not tried this with my ring! but I may be tempted now because we live three hours from my jeweler so it will not get cleaned very often!

ReplyDeleteI never heard of this either! Seems so odd, but I bet it totally works. Toothpaste works to zap acne quickly, so I wouldn't doubt that it can do other things too! :) I'll have to give it a try!

Toothpaste definitely makes a diamond sparkle on a whole new level (especially if you have been a while without cleaning it <-that was me). My husband tried it on my ring and afterwards it was VERY close to as sparkly as it was the night I got it. You should try it!

ReplyDeleteI've done it and it totally works. You just need to work gently around the prongs so they don't get loosened and make sure you rinse it well when you are done. So easy!

ReplyDeleteMy mom just told me about that! But actually I just had my rings cleaned at the store and the lady told me to put my rings in hot water and let them soak, then get the dirt off with a toothbrush.

My jeweler told me to let it sit in windex for a little while and then to scrub it with a toothbrush. This has always worked great for me...when I remember to do it! I think I might try the toothpaste thing because it seems like it would be handier than soaking in windex (since I use toothpaste every day anyway!)
ReplyDeleteI was really nervous the first time I scrubbed my ring with the windex and toothbrush, but then someone reminded me how strong diamonds are, and that helped me get over it!
Whenever I am in the mall I bring my ring to the jeweler it was purchased from and they clean it for free.
ReplyDeleteI have heard of it & heard it works great! but it has to NOT be a "gel" type of tooth paste... it has to be a solid - preferably white kind... I'm going to have to try it now - I've forgotten that tip. I think the point is to get it lathery... & wash it off while its like that - dont let it set up!
ReplyDeleteDo it all the time, you don't get put a glob of it on your ring you put it on the brush, put some water and scrub away. It becomes just like soap; run it under hot, hot water and your shiny. No worrys.

I have heard of that but not on rings, on sinks!! (I tired it and it made the metal handel so super shiny!!! there was a huge change to it!!) maybe you could just try the ring band, not the diamond.

ReplyDeleteI use 1 part ammonia and 3 parts water. I use an old tooth brush to scrub it. It works really well. Just hold your breath when you open the bottle of ammonia or you might pass out :)

ReplyDeleteHey Megan...if you're not excited about the toothpaste - I always thought it left a little film behind - , you might try this little cocktail:
ReplyDeletea couple tablespoons of baking soda in a cup, put your ring in, add a little bit of vinegar and peroxide..
don't add too much or it will bubble up and overflow.
anyway, the bubbling action seems to loosen any debris and then gently scrub with a toothbrush and warm water...I'll sometimes leave them soaking for awhile before I scrub....anyway, just a alternative to the toothpaste.

ReplyDeleteJennifer (a jewelry designer and probable future member of our tribe, though not official yet)told me to just use soap and water and scrub with a soft toothbrush to clean my ring. I actually took it to her at work yesterday and had them do it for me.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of using toothpaste on silver...or something that is tarnished. It must be the white paste. I'm probably scratching my ring..but I use a soft old toothBRUSH..I don't take my ring off often so it gets lotion, condition, etc. good luck! xoxo
