Our Roast

Something monumental happened yesterday.

Luke and I prepared and ate our very first roast with potatoes and carrots. To say that I am excited about this small task would be an understatement.

Honestly, I’m pretty much just flabbergasted that we actually pulled it off.

It is something that we have wanted to do for awhile, but I didn’t have a lot of faith in us. Each time we went to the grocery store Luke would ask me if we could purchase a roast and cook it, and I would look at him as if he was crazy.

A roast?!?!?! We can’t cook a roast, we don’t have any kids!

Now I understand, having kids doesn’t seem like a requirement for cooking a roast, but in my eyes it is something that a mother or grandmother cooks, not a 24 year old who has been known to forget to put water in her cake batter and couldn’t figure out why the dough was so sticky.

Even after reading the box several times.

But this week I decided we needed to give it a try

So we bought it. And then I got really scared. I called my mom asked her several 'roast' questions, I even got on Mimi's Making Meals Blog to see what kind of advice she offered (By the way if you haven't done it yet, check out her recipe blog There are lots of yummy recipes on there!) Then I read the book of my never used crock pot from front to back, I wanted to make sure I had everything covered.

So we washed and peeled the potatos and carrots, cut the carrots, prepared the roast and then put it all in the crock pot. (FYI, usually when I say 'we' I really mean 'Luke', in this case it was all Luke, but it sounds better if I have a part other than just crazy worrier)

Then the next day we came home from work and ate it. And it was delicious.

Now this maybe seem very trivial to you, but to me every ‘first’ thing we do together is so exciting!
Before we got married, actually before we even got engaged I was so nervous about us traveling alone together on our honeymoon. What would happen if we had a problem? Either Luke or I would have to solve it, and that scared the heck out of me.

But we did it, and everything was fine. SO with each new thing we do I get so excited, whether it is traveling around the world together, going furniture shopping, debating on what TV to buy, or simply preparing a roast for dinner, they are all new and exciting adventures in our life!

Oh, by the way, if you have seen my metabolism wandering around aimlessly somewhere will you please tell it to come back to me, I really miss it. It disappeared shortly after the wedding and I need it back, I have lots of thanksgiving and Christmas feasts to partake in.

Thanks!

  2. Congrats on the first roast!! I remember one of the first times I used my crock pot, I left work early because I was so scared it was going to go dry and burn! Roast is great! There is a great recipe out there that uses cream of mushroom soup which helps make a gravy!!

You'll be cooking everything in a crock pot soon!

  5. This was also a big accomplishment for me...too bad after my great idea, my hubby informed me that he doesn't really like roast! Ahhh!!! Oh well, there's always other things to use the crock pot for.

  6. Hilarious! I always felt like I needed a big family to make roast, too! But we did it once, and there was no lookin' back. It's funny because we usually eat on the couch, but every time we have roast, we always set the table and eat there! HA!

  7. I'm glad you made your first roast. I don't think it is silly at all - I got excited about a lot of things like that too:) It is sometimes kind of weird feeling to do more "adult" things. Hope you have lots of leftovers!

  8. Yay for you guys (and Luke :))! It is so fun to think of each first and we totally thought the same thing when we were first married about it just being the two of us! It's just us, a sleep over every night, and just us making all the decisions, woohoo, ha!

  9. Haha! This post is hilarious:) It's so fun being married. Jon and I don't like red meat very much, so we'll probably never cook a roast. But, I totally understand what you mean about it being intimidating! I can't imagine. Way to go for conquering it! The other day we bought a wreath for our front door and as we walked out of the store we felt as if we should have several little ones trailing after us. Ha! Does anyone else think a wreath is such an adult purchase?

  17. You crack me up! I am challenged when it comes to cooking. Needless to say last year I cooked a pork tenderloin for the first time and called just about everyone I know to share the good news that it was edible!

  18. Wow, impressive. I am 31 and have not accomplished this yet. Way to go.

When Jonathan and I got married 7 years ago, I started the "tradition" of saying, "It's our first ______ together!" I first said this on our honeymoon when we had to unexpectedly buy a camera and I said, "It's our first camera together!" LOL It doesn't happen that often now, but when we have a first, Jonathan will say in his best impersonation of me, "It's out first _______ together!" :)

  19. That is so funny, b/c that is exactly how I see it too.. Dustin's fave meal is roast and the works, but it feels like a big family meal! I am debating on making it for his birthday dinner with his family this Sat... I may have to steal some suggestions from ya! :)

  21. Congrats! When we first got married I tried to make some chicken recipe in the crockpot and burned it. I had no idea you could burn something in the crockpot!! Glad you had better results with your roast. :)
